Why we use a kiln to finish drying our firewood logs

I have blogged before around the use of a kiln to get the new standard firewood log moisture content of under 20% (Firewood Moisture Content Facts) for use in wood burners.

It would be nice to be able to season logs down to that moisture, unfortunately it would require vast open side sheds and 2 years worth of working capital ( we are not the whisky industry! able to lay down 3 years production)

In the absence of this option and with the requirement to get below 20% to satisfy the Woodsure/government standards Ready To Burn Standards we must force dry our firewood.

However, we do make as much use of the sun (rare :)) and wind (plenty) to get the initial moisture out of the firewood logs before processing.

We can get the fist half of the moisture out this way (taking it from over 50% to around 25%).

Only then do we process the logs ready for kiln drying.

Fortunately, we use super efficient, state of the art wood chip boilers to do our log drying, and they can take that last 5% out in under 2 days.

The fuel these use includes all of our firewood production waste, that would be dumped otherwise.
