Scandinavian Hardwood Blog

The Hagland Chief arriving in Montrose with a load of high quality hardwood for firewood

Norwegian Hardwood,

Just wanted to blog on the current top seller in our firewood store.

Every year, for the last few years, there is a timber boat heads over from Norway or Sweden to Montrose, just up the road from us.

They bring 2-3000 tonnes of hardwood limbs, for processing by UK firewood producers.

This has been caused by primarily by the shortage of quality hardwood in the UK now. What is coming onto the UK market is stocks from poorly managed forests that are far too twisted, large or knotty. You might think that “wood is wood”, but processing firewood is a specialist endeavor nowadays and the input logs must meet a certain specification.

The Scandinavian material is sourced from forests that  have had superior management techniques and so are straight and clean. This years stock includes quality species including slow grown birch, but also ash and beech. The customers that have started using it are raving about it and coming back to secure more before we sell out.

You may be, rightly, concerned about the miles put on this timber. However for us, it has surprisingly low road miles, as it was sourced close to the Norwegian port and landed just 10 miles up the road from us. Travelling less road miles in total than some of the UK stocks.

Boat transport is very efficient.

So we are offering this product with and introductory price, available in 8″ or 10″ lengths, increased discount for 2 packs and with a moisture content below 20% so suitable for all stoves or open fires.
