I have blogged before around the use of a kiln to get the new standard firewood log moisture content of under 20% (Firewood Moisture Content Facts<\/a><\/strong><\/span>) for use in wood burners.<\/p>\n

It would be nice to be able to season logs down to that moisture, unfortunately it would require vast open side sheds and 2 years worth of working capital ( we are not the whisky industry! able to lay down 3 years production)<\/p>\n

In the absence of this option and with the requirement to get below 20% to satisfy the Woodsure\/government standards Ready To Burn Standards<\/a><\/strong><\/span> we must force dry our firewood.<\/p>\n

However, we do make as much use of the sun (rare :)) and wind (plenty) to get the initial moisture out of the firewood logs before processing.<\/p>\n

We can get the fist half of the moisture out this way (taking it from over 50% to around 25%).<\/p>\n

Only then do we process the logs ready for kiln drying.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, we use super efficient, state of the art wood chip boilers to do our log drying, and they can take that last 5% out in under 2 days.<\/p>\n

The fuel these use includes all of our firewood production waste, that would be dumped otherwise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
